William Thomas Cumberlidge was born in Q1 1877 in Burton Hastings, Warwickshire, England. He was the eldest son of Thomas Cumberlidge and his wife Mary Ann nee Chamberlain. The family were living in Great Harwood in Lancashire by 1881. By 1901 and 1911 William was a cotton weaver. William married Ellen Hinton in Q3 1901 at St Bartholomew's Church, Great Harwood, Lancashire, England. Together they had:
•Annie Elizabeth Cumberlidge born Q4 1901 in Great Harwood, Lancashire
•Tom Francis Cumberlidge born in Q3 1903 and died in Q4 1903 in Great Harwood, Lancashire
•Gladys Cumberlidge born in Q4 1904 in Great Harwood, Lancashire
•Tom Cumberlidge born in Q2 1907 in Great Harwood, Lancashire

William enlisted in the army for World War One. He became Private 17226 in the 8th Battalion of the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. He arrived in France on 28 December 1915. He was killed in action on 2 March 1916. He is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial in Belgium. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory medals. His widow Ellen Cumberlidge collected his effects.
