SALEM SCHOLAR FALLS
General regret will be felt that Private. Walter Whittaker, East Lancashire Regiment., elder son of Mr and Mrs. W. H. Whittaker of 6 Whitaker's Terrace, of Grane Road, Haslingden, fell in action in Mesopotamia on 25th February.
The sad news only reached the parents on Tuesday morning. Deceased, who was 25 years of age and was a cotton weaver at Plantation Mill, enlisted on 9th February, 1916, and he reached the front on 4th July. With the exception of having an attack, of dysentery, from which he made a good recovery, he had stood the campaign well.
He was a scholar at Salem United Methodist Sunday School, and on the roll of honour there.
